Investigation of Mercury and Metals at Hydroelectric Facilities

Client: BC Hydro

Azimuth has worked with BC Hydro on a number of projects to investigate mercury in the aquatic environment as a result of historic hydroelectric development projects and regulation of reservoirs. Hydroelectric facilities that have been investigated include Bridge-River Carpenter/Seton Lake, Williston Reservoir, and Falls River Reservoir. Collection and analysis of mercury and metals in water, sediment, soil, invertebrates and fish were made to understand mercury/metals dynamics in the food web. A key component of this work is communicating environmental and health risks to local First Nations communities concerned with environmental health and mercury concentrations in fish.
